Knife Care & Maintenance
Quick care checklist (30 seconds)
- Hand wash only (never dishwasher)
- Dry fully right away (including near handle/guard)
- Light oil before storage (food-safe mineral oil is fine)
- Store dry (avoid sealing moisture inside a sheath long-term)
Why Damascus and high-carbon steels need care
Damascus and high-carbon steels can offer excellent sharpness and edge feedback, but they are more reactive than stainless steel. That means moisture, acids, and neglect can cause rust or dark patina. With simple habits, your knife stays sharp, clean, and attractive for years.
Cleaning after kitchen use
- Use mild soap and warm water
- Avoid soaking for long periods
- Dry completely with a towel
- Keep the blade clean around the spine, choil, and handle junction
Cleaning after hunting or field use
- Wipe off blood, fat, and moisture immediately
- Dry before returning to the sheath
- When you return home: wash, dry, then apply a light oil coat
Oiling: what to use and how often
For knives, use a food-safe oil (mineral oil is a safe choice). Apply a thin coat before storage, especially in humid climates or if you won’t use the knife for a while.
Rust, patina, and what’s normal
-
Patina is a natural darkening that can occur on carbon steel — normal and harmless.
- Surface rust is usually removable if caught early.
How to remove light surface rust (safe method)
- Wipe the blade clean
- Use a gentle acid like vinegar or lemon on a soft cloth
- Rub in the direction of the Damascus pattern
- Dry completely and re-oil
Sharpening and honing basics
- Hone regularly to keep the edge aligned
- Sharpen on quality stones or a guided system when needed
- Avoid grinding aggressively unless you know what you’re doing
Storage rules that prevent damage
- Store knives dry
- For long-term storage, avoid keeping the blade sealed in a damp sheath
- Use a leather roll, rack, or dry drawer organizer
FAQ
Are Foladify knives dishwasher safe?
No. Dishwashers are harsh on steel and handles. Always hand wash and dry fully.
Will Damascus rust?
Damascus and high-carbon steels can rust if left wet. With drying and light oiling, it stays protected.
Is patina a problem?
No. Patina is normal on carbon steels and does not ruin performance.
